The Great Gatsby
Oral History Book

This project was created during my Design and Typography III course, where the assignment was to design an editorial piece based on an orally told history. I chose to focus on Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, exploring how a classic novel was reinterpreted through a modern, highly stylized cinematic lens.

I approached the project by framing it as an oral history, using the format to highlight multiple perspectives on the adaptation process—from storytelling and visual style to cultural impact. Rather than presenting the information in a traditional article format, I used editorial design to guide the narrative, allowing typography, layout, and pacing to reflect the energy and drama of Luhrmann’s interpretation.

Visually, I was inspired by the contrast between the novel’s 1920s setting and the film’s bold, contemporary aesthetic. I explored how design could mirror this duality through typography, composition, and hierarchy, creating layouts that feel both structured and expressive.

Designed in Adobe InDesign, with supporting image editing in Photoshop, this project allowed me to further develop my editorial design skills while exploring how storytelling can be shaped through layout and visual rhythm. It reflects my ongoing interest in film, narrative, and translating cinematic experiences into print.
